Chanelle discovered a new route into business through an apprenticeship.
Chanelle lives in Wrexham. As she was preparing for her GCSEs, she felt unsure about what to do next. She didn’t have a clear idea of her future career.
She said, “Before I got support, I genuinely didn't have a clue what I wanted to do. I just picked options I enjoyed, but I didn't know what I wanted to do long term.”
Discovering an interest in business
Chanelle heard about Careers Wales through her school. She was referred to Ryan, a careers adviser, for support. Together, they discussed the different options available after school.
Chanelle said, “Ryan asked me what my interests were and what options I picked. That helped guide me towards different options based on what I enjoyed.
“I found out more about careers in business. Ryan put me in the direction of jobs in business and courses at college that I might be interested in.”
Discovering apprenticeships
One of the options Ryan discussed with Chanelle was apprenticeships.
Chanelle said, “He spoke to me about apprenticeships, and that really helped because I genuinely didn't know much about them before.”
The more Chanelle learned, the more she liked the idea of gaining experience in the workplace while continuing to learn. Ryan's support helped her explore this route further and apply for opportunities.
Taking the next step
Chanelle has now secured an apprenticeship with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
She said, “I am excited. If I didn't speak to Ryan, I don't think I would have gone for an apprenticeship role.“Having support opens more doors.”
Chanelle is looking forward to gaining workplace experience and developing her skills in a business environment.
Feeling confident about the future
Chanelle said, “I feel a lot more confident now. I know what I'm doing, so I feel better in myself.”
She also encourages other young people who may be worried about their results or future plans to stay positive. Chanelle said, “You can't change it, so just think positive and work with what you've got. If you don't get the results you want, you can work around it.”
She added, “Careers Wales helped me loads and I would recommend it to anyone else.”
