Martin Gallimore and Lesley Smith from Future Valleys Construction being presented with their award by presenter Huw Stephens and Nikki Lawrence, Chief Executive, Careers Wales

Future Valleys Construction has been proactive and committed in delivering its programme to young people.

The company has been supporting pupils with careers learning at Greenfield Special School in Merthyr Tydfil. This is the second year in a row that they have been presented with an award from Careers Wales.

Workshops

The company has provided bespoke workshops to students between years nine and thirteen. Sessions have included:

  • A bridge building exercise
  • A focus session on different jobs in the construction industry
  • Information on health and safety roles
  • A site visit

Working with the school

Martin Gallimore and his team work closely with the school to address pupils’ different needs and encourage beneficial outcomes.

Careers Wales business engagement adviser, Heidi Purnell, said: “Future Valleys have hosted a number of engaging sessions to help the pupils learn more about the construction industry. Going beyond this, Martin wants to ensure each session is more successful than the last.

Staff from Greenfield and Future Valleys Construction meet regularly to discuss the workshops and evaluate the outputs. They review possible changes to develop the best possible outcomes to students."

Award winners

Future Valleys Construction was presented with a Valued Partner Award by Careers Wales in November 2022.

Martin Gallimore and his team, received the award for Best Ongoing Relationship with a School.

Martin, who is the Visitor Centre and Community Benefits Officer, said: “We’re really pleased to have won the award.

“We work in partnership with schools in our local area. We work with them to develop bespoke activities to meet their needs.

“We work on inspiring them and supporting the STEM curriculum. All the engagement that we do really seems to have an impact on the pupils we work with. That’s what keeps us going. It keeps us wanting to do more and more with them.”

Heidi added: “It has been a pleasure to work with the staff at Future Valleys Construction and Greenfield Special School. This is a partnership that goes from strength to strength.”
