Abby's careers adviser helped her find her path to working with animals.
A passion for farming
Abby, a Year 10 student in Gwynedd, was feeling lost about her future. She had always been interested in working with farm animals. However, she was uncertain about how to turn her passion into a career.
Exploring options
Cari, a careers adviser in Abby’s school, was helping students in Years 10 and 11 think about their futures and explore their options.
Abby attended one of Cari’s group sessions. Later, she reached out to arrange a one-on-one meeting to discuss her options in more detail.
Abby explained: “Cari asked me about my interests and what I wanted to do. I told her I loved farming and was interested in milking cows. Cari helped me find courses like animal care Level 1 and Level 2, and she explained how apprenticeships work.
“Cari was amazing. She showed me the Careers Wales website and how to use it. She helped me stopped worrying and she gave me lots of reassurance.” With careers adviser’s guidance, Abby successfully applied for an apprenticeship at a dairy farm.
Change of mind
Soon after starting her apprenticeship, Abby decided that attending college would better fit her long-term goals.
She has started an animal care Level 1 course. She is excited about the opportunities college can offer her future career.
Advice to others
Abby wants to encourage other young people to seek help from a careers adviser.
She said: “If you’re not sure what to do, talk to a careers adviser. The sessions with Cari were lovely. “I feel much more secure about my future now.”
