Viridor's Story

Eamonn from Viridor holding up the award

As a supporter for a net zero Wales, Viridor is very committed to supporting its future workforce.

Viridor diverts at least 95% of South Wales’ residual waste away from landfill. The company also generates electricity for the National Grid. They also remove high quality raw materials, which are in turn recycled

Working with schools

Eamonn Scullion is Viridor’s visitor centre and community benefits officer. He speaks to schools about the impact of landfill. His talks encourage the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Viridor has supported 46 events in 30 schools throughout Wales in the past academic year. These activities inform pupils about careers and apprenticeships in the net zero economy.

The activities Eamonn has completed include:

  • Careers Wales events such as the Apprenticeship Fair and Choose your Future
  • Working with a school’s Eco Committee
  • Site visits for world of work – including visits from pupil referral units (PRUs) and special schools
  • Supporting events such as engineering days in schools
  • Speaking to Year 8 pupils before their GCSE options
  • Completed a motivational talk to Year 10 pupils
  • Speaking to Year 12 pupils about the advantages of apprenticeships

Other types of support

Eamonn also works in primary schools. He is supporting a Barry primary school taking part in the Careers Wales Quality Award.

During the visit to High Street Primary School, he talked about a project they could set up. It would aim to make them more aware of the waste they produce, and how to reduce, recycle and reuse. The project would finish with a visit to their state of the art site in Cardiff Bay.

Award winners

In January 2025, Viridor won the Valued Partner Award for Best Supporter of the Net Zero Agenda.

It’s a big honour for us to win this award today. It’s a privilege to work with young people and most importantly show them what it looks like to fill in the gap between what they want to do and achieving it.
It’s also about showing them that Wales is where their future can happen. There are many opportunities just around the corner.”
