Scooby's Autos' Story

David Pearce from Scooby’s Autos being presented with their award by presenter Huw Stephens and Nikki Lawrence, Chief Executive, Careers Wales

David Pearce, owner of Scooby’s Autos, has had a huge positive impact on young people. The company has provided fantastic opportunities through work experience.

The first young person to have a placement at Scooby’s was not interested in school. David took them on at the business for work experience. He showed them what to do, how to do it and encouraged them to try things on their own.

Scooby’s Autos provided the young person with a safe space to learn. The pupil went on to increase to two days a week at the placement and enrolled on a college course. David was very supportive of this move. He had even helped them with their application.

Moving on to an apprenticeship

David ensured the pupil had the right mix of learning through observing and practicing for themselves. Through this learning, the pupil has been able to develop particular skills, and then carry out tasks alone.

The young person did so well, that they are now completing an apprenticeship at Scooby’s. They are now able to support others undertaking work experience at the site. This recently includes a year 10 pupil from their old school.

Award winners

Scooby’s Autos was presented with a Valued Partner Award by Careers Wales in November 2022.

David said: “I didn’t expect to win the award, but I’m really pleased. I’ve called the young person who is doing an apprenticeship with us and told them all about it.

“When Margo came in and asked if I would consider work experience for some young people who weren’t enjoying school, I said ‘well I was one of those kids, so I know exactly how it feels’.

“It’s hard work being a mechanic, and I think it’s really important for them to get real experience of the job and everyday life in work and see if it’s what they want to do."

It’s all about giving them a chance

Careers Wales business engagement adviser, Margo Farbrace, who works closely with Scooby’s Autos said: “David is always happy, smiley and welcoming and believes that everyone deserves a chance.

“He offers a safe environment where young people can learn more about the role of a mechanic and experience the routine and life in the world of work.

“Work experience placements like these provide an invaluable experience for young people, especially those who are struggling in a school environment.”
