Summary
Figures are for students aged 15 or 16 who were in their final year of statutory education, Year 11 in mainstream and special schools during the 2018-19 academic year. The survey, providing the destination of these students on the 31st October 2019 was in respect of 30,518 students that is the 2019 Year 11 destinations cohort.
- 51.1% (15,593 individuals) were male and 48.8% (14,905 individuals) were female. 20 students (0.07%) identified themselves as ‘Other’
- Most of the cohort, 94.1% (28,708 individuals), went into some form of continued learning in full time education, part time education (16 hours or less a week) or work-based training. This represented 92.9% of males, 95.3% of female students and 85.0% of students in the Other category
- The greatest proportion of the cohort, 88.2 % (26,925 individuals) continued in full time education.
- 55.0% continued at a further education college (14,808 individuals) and 45.0% of those continuing in full time education (12,117 individuals) continued their education in school
- A higher proportion of males (5.5 percentage points more than females) chose to continue their education at further education college
- A higher proportion of females (5.5 percentage points more than males) chose to remain in school
- 8.1% of the cohort (2,478 individuals) entered the labour market, either going into employment or work-based training. More males than females chose to enter the labour market, a differential of 3.5 percentage points (9.8% males compared to 6.3% females)
- 3.8% (1,145 individuals) entered work-based training non-employed status
- 1.9% of the cohort (585 individuals) entered work-based training with employed status. A higher proportion of males (2.8%) than females (1%) were in this category (a difference of 1.8 percentage points)
- 2.5% (748 individuals) entered employment outside Government supported funding. More males than females chose this route; a 1.4 percentage point difference
- On the survey date, 1.8% of the cohort (537 individuals), were known not to be in any form of education, training or employment (NEET). The figure for males was 2.0% (319 individuals) and for females it was 1.4% (216 individuals)
- 46.0% (247 individuals) of those known not to be NEET were able to enter employment, education or training (EET) (as opposed to the 290 (54.0%) individuals who were unable to enter EET due to illness, pregnancy, etc.)
- There was no response to the survey from 1.1% of the cohort (350 individuals)
- 0.6% (175 individuals), were shown to have left their local area

Ethnicity
Of those returning information on ethnicity from ethnic minority backgrounds the most popular choice of route across all minority ethnic groups was continuing in full time education at 92.3% (compared with 87.8% for those from white backgrounds).
A higher percentage of those with white backgrounds went into the various labour market categories (8.6%) compared to those from minority ethnic backgrounds (3.5%).
The proportion of young people who were NEET was higher for those from white backgrounds (1.8% or 442 individuals) compared to individuals from an ethnic minority (1.2% or 24 individuals).
