Year 12 Pupil Destinations from Schools in Wales 2019

Summary

Figures are for students aged 16 or 17 who were typically in the first year of a school sixth form. The survey, providing the destination of these students on the 31st October 2019 was in respect of 12,111 students, that is the 2019 Year 12 destinations cohort.

  • 46.4% (5,617 individuals) were male and 53.6% (6,490 individuals) were female
  • The majority of the cohort, 94.3% (11,417 individuals) went into some form of continued learning in full time education, part time education (16 hours or less a week) or work-based training. This represented 93.3% of male and 95.1% of female students
  • The greatest proportion of the cohort, 92.8 % (11,240 individuals) continued in full time education
  • 90.2% of those continuing in full time education (10,140 individuals) continued their education in school and 9.8% continued at a further education college (1,100 individuals)
  • A higher proportion of males (2.1 percentage points more than females) chose to continue their education at colleges of further education
  • A higher proportion of females (2.1 percentage points more than males) chose to remain in school
  • 3.9% of the cohort (468 individuals) entered the labour market, either going into employment or work-based training. The difference between males and females choosing to enter the labour market was 1.0 percentage points (4.4% males and 3.4% females)
  • 0.7% (80 individuals) entered work-based training non-employed status
  • 0.7% of the cohort (88 individuals) entered work-based training with employed status. A higher proportion of males (0.8%) than females (0.6%) were in this category
  • 2.5% (300 individuals) entered employment outside Government supported funding. The difference between males (2.8%) and females (2.2%) choosing this route was 0.6 percentage points
  • On the survey date, 0.8% of the cohort (99 individuals), were known not to be in any form of education, training or employment (NEET). The figure for males was 1.1% (61 individuals) and for females it was 0.6% (38 individuals)
  • 57.6% (57 individuals) of those known not to be in any form of education, employment or training (NEET) were able to enter employment, education or training (EET)
  • 42.4% of NEETs (42 individuals) were unable to enter EET due to illness, pregnancy or other reasons
  • There was no response to the survey from 2.2% of the cohort (268 individuals)
  • 0.2% (27 individuals), were shown to have left their local area

Ethnicity

Of those returning information on ethnicity the most popular choice of route across all minority ethnic groups was continuing in full time education at 93.5%. This is higher than the proportion for those from a white background (93.0%).

The least popular route for all minority ethnic groups was continuing in education part-time (16 hours or less a week) with no individuals taking this option. The same route was also the least popular option for those from a white background (9 individuals).

A higher percentage of those with white backgrounds (0.7 percentage point difference) were represented in the employed category, 2.6% from white backgrounds compared to 1.8% from minority ethnic backgrounds.

The NEET figure for those from white backgrounds is higher than for those from an ethnic minority background (0.8% and 0.5% respectively).
