The Hywel Dda University Health Board’s story

Staff from Hywel Dda University Health Board

Hywel Dda University Health Board works across Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, and Carmarthenshire. They inspire young people to explore opportunities in healthcare and the NHS.

Working with Careers Wales

The health board has worked with Careers Wales for many years. They are a School Valued Partner to several schools in the area.

They support young people through activities like:

  • Mock interviews
  • Apprenticeship talks
  • Career carousel events
  • Speed networking
  • Option evenings
  • Teacher support events
  • A Choose Your Future career event in Aberystwyth

Positive experiences for pupils

Hywel Dda works closely with schools to connect lessons to healthcare careers. For example, they enrich science, maths, and technology lessons with engaging healthcare presentations.

The health board also supports GCSE pupils studying health and social care. NHS professionals attend schools to talk about different job roles, skills, and qualifications.

In medical science lessons, staff have demonstrated an electrocardiogram. They also showed blood pressure checks and other medical procedures.

Year 8 science pupils learned about x-rays from a radiographer. This supported their physics lessons and gave them a better understanding of this healthcare area.

Promoting NHS careers

Staff from the health board visit schools and events. They discuss jobs within fields including dentistry, nursing and speech therapy.

They also explain different career paths and opportunities for young people.

The health board’s ‘Future Workforce Team’ runs sessions for Year 11 to 13 pupils. They talk about apprenticeships, volunteering, and work experience in the NHS.

Award winners

In January 2025, the health board won the Valued Partner Award for Outstanding Achievement.

It is an absolute honour to receive this Outstanding Achievement award on behalf of Hywel Dda. We believe that investing in people is at the heart of delivering healthcare and building stronger communities.

That is why we’re so proud to be recognised for our work in careers development and workforce innovation. This award is particularly meaningful because it acknowledges our efforts to build pathways, opportunities and partnerships that inspire and support the next generation.”
